REVIEW VINTAGES 2010

VINTAGES The first 2010 vintages are now in the bottle and have been released lately. The new wines show a lot of potential. The red wines are in barrels, settling down for a bit of maturation.
The last batch of grapes for the harvest was picked in the last week of March. We harvested almost the same amount of grapes as the previous years. Overall it was a good harvest this year, but certainly there were a few
challenges as well. The Winter of 2009 finished quite late and was
marked with some high wind during October, which damaged some vines
during fruit- set slightly. The month was followed by an irregular, intense rainfall in November,
which created some challenges in getting the preventative spraying
routines in the vineyard accurately done. |
|
As a result, we noticed some
sporadic outbreaks of downy mildew on our leaves. On the 22nd of
January we harvested the first part of our Sauvignon Blanc block. On
this particular day, we experienced a cold front from the Atlantic
Ocean that kept the sugar and acid balance of the berries constant. We
were very fortunate that all the white grapes were harvested before the
heat wave started. The late rain was very beneficial to our vineyards,
so that we were still able to get fruit at the correct stage of
ripening. Across the board, all the varieties are looking good, for
example our Pinotage, Shiraz as well as Chenin Blanc. The wines,
especially the reds in the barrels, have shown very good potential so
far.
Surely the 2010 vintage will be remembered and certainly not only
because of the FIFA World Cup 2010.

NEW WINE RELEASE

NEW WINE RELEASE
We are at present assembling our new wines and this year our award-winning wine range will be complimented by the release of some new white and red "Cape Blends" as well as a new red Cuvee. We don’t want to speak to much about it now and take all the excitement away too soon before the release, but so far we can tell you that our white wine cuvee will be based on 4 noble cultivars like Chenin Blanc, Viognier as well as our typical but unique South African variety, the Pinotage, and something that we have vinified as white wine. It’s going to be very exciting, that we can say!
The new red wine is based on Pinotage and will be released as an assemblage with Cabernet Sauvignon and ..... we do not want to reveal it yet either! We will introduce both wines in the second half of the year!

Another exciting release: The new De Leuwen Jagt Merlot – Malbec. The
wine of our De Leuwen Jagt range is produced in a style that emphasises
the fruit flavours characteristic of each grape varietal, Merlot and
Malbec, with gentle oaking on the red wines adding complexity but not
detracting from the approachable style. There were many influences in the development of the La Capra brand,
all of which have had an impact on Fairview. There is a strong Balkan
musical influence, with the celebration of life and provenance
featuring prominently. This easy-drinking red wine is all about sharing
and celebrating with friends and just having a jolly good time.
Seidelberg has always taken an innovative approach to the wines to
ensure that the style of the wines simply don’t taste like more of the
same. The Merlot-Malbec creates an interest for our value customers and
will provide them with an alternative to the other wine styles of our
range. The wine is great for entertaining at home and it truly offers
great value.
The new De Leuwen Jagt Merlot – Malbec will be available to purchase
from now on through the on-trade and restaurant market and will allow
consumers to purchase good value wines from the Seidelberg cellar in
the retail environment.
